Vintage vehicles took to Jersey’s roads on Boxing Day as part of the Old Motor Club’s traditional cavalcade, which organisers said once again attracted strong interest from the public.
More than 60 classic cars, all dating from before 1951, assembled at St Helier’s Esplanade before setting off on a circuit of the island, passing each of the 12 parish churches along the way.
The annual event, now in its 56th year, continues to draw crowds of spectators. Old Motor Club president Joan Gardner said the support from onlookers helped make the day memorable.
“People come out to wave and enjoy it — it really adds to the atmosphere,” she said, describing the response as enthusiastic.
Ms Gardner, who is in her fourth year as president, said organisers had introduced a scheduled stop in St Peter this year to help keep the procession together.
“We’re stopping at Strive Health Club to try and regroup a little,” she said. “Some cars move faster than others, but it’s very much not a race.”
St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft said the cavalcade brought smiles to faces across the island.
“There’s a sense of nostalgia, and the vehicles are clearly very well cared for,” he said. “The weather has been cold but dry, which makes it a great day for a drive.”
Crowds gathered at the Esplanade on Friday morning to see the decorated cars set off, with honorary police assisting at busy junctions throughout the route — support Ms Gardner said was greatly appreciated.
