Jersey Monitors UK Ban on EU Meat and Dairy Over Disease Fears

Jersey officials say they are keeping a close watch on new UK restrictions banning personal imports of meat and dairy products from the EU, introduced to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

The UK announced the temporary measure this week, and Guernsey authorities have also urged travellers not to bring in restricted items.

Jersey’s Veterinary Team confirmed it is “monitoring the situation” and is in contact with UK and Channel Islands counterparts. While no similar ban has been introduced in Jersey, officials say rules are under constant review and may change.

The UK’s restricted list includes common items like pork, beef, lamb, sausages, cheese, butter, and yoghurt—even if they’re sealed or bought from duty-free.

FMD poses no risk to humans but is highly contagious among animals, leading to severe health issues in livestock. The UK currently has no cases, but authorities say caution is essential to avoid any outbreak.
