Jersey’s States Assembly has backed, in principle, a law to bring back senators at the next election.
Senators, elected on an island-wide mandate, were scrapped in 2021 but will return in 2026 after a decision earlier this year to replace one deputy in each district with a senator.
The Privileges and Procedures Committee, which drafted the law, said it had worked quickly to ensure the changes were ready in time.
A proposal to cut the number of senators from nine to seven was debated but narrowly rejected. Further amendments will be considered before the legislation is finalised.
