New Stamps Released to Mark 125 Years of Jersey Opera House
A special set of six commemorative stamps has been issued to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Jersey Opera House.
Designed by local artist Abi Overland, the stamps draw inspiration from the historic Grade II listed building and its rich cultural legacy.
The first stamp in the collection features architect Adolphus Curry, who played a key role in designing the opera house’s iconic façade. Other stamps highlight key moments in the venue’s history, including a tribute to actress Lillie Langtry, who took part in its inaugural performance, and a depiction of the VE Grand Variety Show celebrating the end of the Occupation.
Jersey Post said one stamp pays homage to the opera house’s role as a cinema in 1957, recalling a moment when jockeys rode horses into the auditorium to test audience reactions.
The final stamp commemorates the opera house’s recent £13 million restoration, marking its grand return as a cultural landmark.
