Smart Sensors Help Jersey Farmers Monitor Cow Health

Farmers in Jersey are embracing technology to keep a closer eye on their herds, thanks to innovative ear sensors that track the health and well-being of their cows in real-time.

Much like a fitness tracker for humans, these smart tags provide constant updates on key health indicators, including fertility, nutrition, and general activity. The data is collected 24/7 and can be accessed through the CowManager app on a farmer’s smartphone or computer.

Using temperature and movement tracking, the sensors monitor cows' eating habits and rumination—the process of chewing cud. If a cow exhibits unusual behavior, such as reduced movement or loss of appetite, an automatic alert is sent to the farmer.

A spokesperson for Jersey Dairy highlighted the benefits of the system, explaining that early detection allows farmers to intervene before a cow shows visible signs of illness.

“This proactive approach means potential health issues can be addressed sooner, improving overall herd welfare and reducing the need for intensive treatments,” they said.

With advancements like these, technology is playing an increasingly vital role in modern dairy farming, helping farmers ensure healthier herds and more efficient operations.
