Jersey’s States Assembly has voted to reinstate senators in time for the next election, restoring the island-wide mandate scrapped in 2021.
The law passed by 28 votes to 17 means each district will lose one deputy, making way for nine senators.
Alternative proposals were debated but rejected, including cutting the number of senators to seven, holding a separate election day, or allowing failed candidates to stand again for other roles.
Members did, however, back a change preventing by-elections for vacant senatorial seats within nine months of a general election.
