Sea Wall Railings Dropped Amid Lack of Support

Plans to install railings along the sea wall in St Aubin have been scrapped due to insufficient public and political backing, according to the Ministerial Office.

Infrastructure Minister Constable Andy Jehan had initially proposed the railings in December, citing safety concerns along the sea wall at La Haule. However, following feedback, the project will not proceed as originally intended.

Instead, alternative safety measures will be implemented. A solid white line will be painted along the edge of the path beside the sea wall, and the physical separation between the cycle and pedestrian paths at the north-eastern end will be extended. Additional warning signs will also be installed.

The Infrastructure Department said the measures would be introduced gradually.

“These proposed steps aim to strike a balance between public safety, technical recommendations, and public opinion,” a spokesperson said. “They represent a practical and pragmatic compromise.”

To avoid contributing to “urban clutter,” the department explained that the new measures would be assessed over time to gauge both effectiveness and public acceptance. This approach is intended to enhance safety while minimising visual impact.

Officials added that the changes would help determine whether further interventions might be necessary in the future to ensure the area remains safe for all users.
