Island Pupils Become Published Authors in World Book Day Project

Students from schools across Jersey are now officially published authors after contributing to a new book created as part of World Book Day celebrations.

Le Rocquier School led the initiative, participating in Kingston University’s Big Read Project, which aims to inspire young people to write. The result is The Jersey Files, a collection of short stories written by pupils from Le Rocquier, Victoria College, Les Quennevais, and Jersey College for Girls.

The students received guidance from author Peter J Murphy, who helped them develop their stories and also contributed his own writing to the book.

'Proud moment' for young writers

For 11-year-old Ned, the experience was both exciting and rewarding. His story takes readers to the abandoned hospital in St Saviour, where three boys encounter a mysterious, tall figure.

"I feel really happy for myself," he said. "It was fun just letting my creativity flow. Writing more helps me be more creative, and I learn new words to use in my stories."

Each story in The Jersey Files draws inspiration from locations around the island. Georgia, 12, set her tale in St Catherine’s Woods, following two sisters playing hide and seek when one suddenly vanishes.

"I'm really proud because I never thought something I wrote would end up in a real published book," she said. "Creative writing can influence people and spread creativity everywhere. I hope more young people try it."

Looking to the future

Le Rocquier's assistant head teacher, Gemma Sutherland, said the project was about more than just writing—it was about helping students reconnect with reading in a digital age.

"To say I'm proud would be an understatement," she said. "Our island thrives on stories, and these students have inspired us all to keep telling them. We hope to make this project even bigger next year."

The Jersey Files has been published by Medina Publishing and is now available for readers to enjoy the unique stories crafted by some of the island’s youngest talent.
