Jersey Officials Detail Steps for Reintroduction of Senators in 2026 Election
Jersey officials have outlined the process for reinstating senators at the 2026 election, following a recent vote in the States Assembly.
The States Assembly confirmed that a law to reintroduce nine senator positions would be drafted by the Legislative Drafting Office. Once completed, the proposed legislation will be brought before the Assembly for debate and final approval.
If the law is approved, it will be sent to the Privy Council for sign-off before returning to the Assembly to set the date for when the changes will take effect.
The States Assembly also announced that the date for the 2026 election is set to be debated during a meeting on April 1.
Last week, politicians voted 25-20 in favor of reintroducing the senator roles, which were abolished during the 2021 election.
Election Date Dispute
Under the proposal from Deputy Elaine Millar, each of Jersey’s nine voting districts would see its current deputy replaced with a senator elected on an island-wide basis.
The Privileges and Procedures Committee has proposed holding the next election on June 7, 2026. However, an amendment has been tabled by Deputy Kristina Moore, suggesting an alternative election date of April 26, 2026.
