The Royal British Legion Women’s Section in Jersey has celebrated the centenary of its first meeting, held on 14 October 1926.

A special service took place at the Town Church on Sunday, led by the island’s Dean, the Very Reverend Mike Keirle. The ceremony included the laying down of the branch’s old standard and the dedication of a new one.

The Women’s Section was established at La Haule Manor, where 12 committee members representing different districts came together to raise awareness of the organisation.

Its initial aim was to raise funds to support families in need. The group’s efforts quickly made a difference, with eight families receiving meat and groceries at Christmas in its first year.

The branch held its first Remembrance Day poppy collection in November 1927, after the men’s committee asked its members to organise collections across the island.

This year’s poppy appeal is due to begin on 23 October.
