Abortions in Jersey Reach Highest Level Since 2002, Report Reveals

More abortions were carried out in Jersey in 2024 than in any year since 2002, according to the latest Public Health report.

The Abortions Report recorded approximately 280 terminations last year, marking a rise from 260 in 2023 and 210 in 2002.

The highest number of abortions occurred among women aged 25 to 29, the report noted.

Jersey also recorded its highest ever abortion ratio, with 390 abortions per 1,000 live births — significantly above both the EU average of 199 and Great Britain's 328. This represents the highest ratio reported in Jersey in 25 years.

The report attributed the rise to both a gradual increase in abortions and a notable decline in live births in recent years. It also suggested that improved access to abortion services and shifting reproductive choices may be contributing factors.

The abortion rate — the number of abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age — rose from 9.7 in 2020 to 14.9 in 2024.

Encouragingly, 93% of abortions in 2024 were performed before 10 weeks of gestation, a statistic Public Health said reflects earlier pregnancy recognition and improved access to care.
