Jersey Schoolchildren Celebrate African Culture

Schoolchildren across Jersey have been exploring African culture and heritage as part of Africa Awareness Week, led by the charity Friends of Africa CI.

The group visited schools around the island, offering talks, music, and Q&A sessions to help pupils understand African identity and traditions.

"We need to embrace our differences as well as our similarities," said Lesley Katsande, a representative of the charity, who praised the warm reception from schools.

Ms Katsande noted that African and Caribbean people make up 1.7% of Jersey’s population — a relatively significant figure for the island. “Schools have been responsive to our campaign,” she added.

At Rouge Bouillon Primary, pupils Jayden and Georgia, both seven, enjoyed the interactive presentation. “It was fun and fantastic,” said Jayden. Georgia added, “It’s been really good. I think it would be cool to learn about different countries.”

As part of the week’s activities, Friends of Africa is also hosting fashion and food stalls in the Royal Square and a free African music event in the evening. The charity hopes to expand its outreach next year to include care homes.
