Former Jersey Priest Jailed for Child Sex Abuse
A former Catholic priest in Jersey, Piotr Antoni Glas, has been sentenced to five years in prison for sexually abusing a child between 2004 and 2007.
Glas, 61, was convicted in April of 11 offences, including three counts of gross indecency. The abuse involved grooming the victim with gifts and exploiting his position of trust, including acts related to a foot fetish. He also manipulated the victim’s family, gaining their trust through spiritual and financial support.
The court described his actions as “planned and deliberate,” with the Deputy Bailiff calling it “a serious breach of trust.” Glas was also given a lifelong restraining order, added to the sex offenders register for 10 years, and ordered to pay over £12,000 toward the victim’s therapy.
Throughout sentencing, Glas remained silent with his eyes closed.
The victim has been diagnosed with PTSD. Authorities praised their courage in coming forward. Both the police and the NSPCC condemned Glas’s abuse of his religious role, with the Bishop of Portsmouth issuing a public apology in April.
