Plans have been lodged to overhaul the roof of Fort Regent as part of wider proposals to revive the landmark leisure complex and return it to its original 1970s appearance.
Jersey Development Company (JDC) has applied to remove and replace the site’s distinctive wave-form and dome roofing as part of a major redevelopment of the St Helier venue.
The company said the roof, constructed in 1974 and protected as a Grade II listed structure, has suffered significant deterioration over time. The proposed works were described as necessary to preserve the building’s structure and maintain safety for visitors.
Under the wider redevelopment plans, Fort Regent could house a 2,500-seat theatre, a 12-lane bowling alley, a six-screen cinema, indoor play facilities, climbing and bouldering areas, as well as new food and drink outlets.
JDC said the scheme would involve replacing existing roof coverings and glazing, alongside broader improvements to weatherproofing.
The company added that the refurbishment would help secure the long-term future of Fort Regent, protect its heritage features and support its ongoing role as a community and cultural destination within Jersey’s regeneration strategy.
The States of Jersey is expected to borrow an initial £43 million to finance the first phase of the Fort Regent upgrade.
