Oysters Deployed to Improve Water Quality in St Helier Harbour
Nearly 50,000 oysters have been introduced into St Helier Harbour, Jersey, as part of an initiative to enhance water quality through natural filtration.
According to the Ports of Jersey, each oyster can filter up to 190 litres of water per day, meaning the collective impact could reach 9.5 million litres daily. The oysters, placed beneath Albert Pier and near the marina access ramp, are expected to improve the harbour’s ecological health.
Louise Stafford, head of maritime operations, highlighted the oysters' effectiveness, describing them as “small but mighty” in their ability to purify water. The initiative uses sterile triploid oysters, which grow faster and provide consistent filtration.
Chris Le Masurier, from the Jersey Oyster Company, hopes the project will create a cleaner and more sustainable marine environment for future generations.
