People considering a run in Jersey’s next election are being offered the chance to take part in a new training course designed to explain what the role of a States Member involves.

The free six-week programme will give participants an introduction to the work of politicians, the support available to them, and how the States Assembly and government operate. It will also include practical guidance on public speaking, handling the media and online commentary, and the rules governing election advertising.

Organised by Vote.je, the course will be delivered by experienced staff from the States Greffe, the Government of Jersey and the States of Jersey Police.

Jenny O’Brien, Head of Digital and Public Engagement, said standing for election could be daunting for many people.

“Putting yourself forward is a significant step, and candidates often face situations that are completely new to them, such as hustings and media engagement,” she said. “We want to make sure that anyone thinking about standing next June has the opportunity to understand what’s involved, both during the campaign and once elected.

“The sessions have been designed to be flexible, allowing people to attend the topics most relevant to them. This is the first time we’ve offered a course like this and there’s already strong interest.”

The course begins on Wednesday 28 January, with sessions running from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

Anyone wishing to take part can contact Vote.je by emailing contact@vote.je.

Completion of the course is not a requirement for standing in the June 2026 election, and attending does not commit participants to becoming candidates.
