Jersey War Tunnels Sold to New Owner After Over 60 Years
A significant change in ownership has taken place at one of Jersey’s most iconic tourist attractions, the Jersey War Tunnels (JWT), marking the first change in ownership in over six decades.
The 29.5-acre site in St Lawrence, known for its poignant wartime history, has been sold to Trevellyan Operations, a company that specialises in heritage sites, from Daisy Hill Real Estate. The sale, which was officially confirmed in June, amounted to over £5.5 million.
The Jersey War Tunnels, a complex of tunnels carved into the hillside during World War II, were originally constructed by forced laborers from across Europe during Nazi Germany's occupation of the Channel Islands. The 1km-long network holds a rich and harrowing history, with exhibitions showcasing life under occupation and the resilience of the people who endured it.
Lance Trevellyan, leader of Trevellyan Operations, expressed his commitment to modernizing the site while preserving its historical significance. He plans to incorporate cutting-edge technology to enhance the visitor experience, providing a more immersive and engaging way to learn about the site’s stories.
As the number of individuals with direct memories of Jersey’s wartime occupation dwindles, Trevellyan emphasized the urgency of capturing and preserving these historical narratives. "It is vital that we record the facts of the past to ensure that future generations fully understand the experiences of those who lived through this dark chapter in history," he stated.
Damian Warman, general manager of the Jersey War Tunnels, shared his optimism for the future under new ownership. He described the change as an “exciting chapter” for the attraction and expressed confidence that Trevellyan Operations would bring valuable investment and new perspectives, ensuring that the site remains a vital and immersive historical resource for visitors.
