Jersey Coastguard Launches Beach Safety Book for Young Children

Jersey Coastguard is helping young islanders learn about beach safety with a new activity book designed for primary school pupils aged five to seven.

The initiative complements the coastguard’s regular school visits and aims to introduce sea safety concepts in an engaging, age-appropriate way. The booklet includes interactive features like a “spot the difference” lifejacket puzzle and a colouring page to help children learn the meanings of lifeguard flags.

“It’s important to share the sea safety message as early as possible,” said Phil Le Neveu, manager of Jersey Coastguard. “We created the book to support teachers in reinforcing these lessons in the classroom.”

Le Neveu said the feedback from educators has been overwhelmingly positive, praising the book's visuals and engaging activities.

For older pupils, the coastguard continues to teach more advanced beach safety topics such as recognising riptides, understanding tide risks, and responding to emergencies. A specially written play on sea safety, first performed last year, is also being brought to nearly all of Jersey’s 32 primary schools this summer.
