Les Ormes to Open £200,000 Padel Courts as Interest in Sport Grows

A £200,000 development at Les Ormes resort in St Brelade will see four new padel tennis courts open by the end of May, marking the first project to benefit from the Government of Jersey’s Better Business grant scheme.

The panoramic double courts have received £75,000 in government funding and aim to support the island’s growing appetite for the fast-paced racquet sport, which is seeing a surge in popularity across the Channel Islands. One Guernsey club has reported a 40% rise in membership since 2023.

Padel, a sport that originated in Mexico in the 1960s, is attracting attention across the UK and beyond. Jersey is also set to host an LTA seniors tour this summer, further cementing its sporting credentials.

Les Ormes general manager Nathan Maguire said the new courts would contribute to the island’s expanding sports scene and provide a fun, accessible activity for players of all skill levels.

“It’s a great way for people to socialise, stay active, and improve their wellbeing,” he said, adding that the venue hopes to appeal to both locals and visitors alike.
