Card payments have become the norm in Jersey, but most islanders still believe cash should not disappear from everyday transactions, according to newly released government survey data.

The Jersey Opinions & Lifestyle Survey 2025 shows that 96% of adults now prefer to pay by debit or credit card, reflecting a steady shift towards digital payments. The survey, based on responses from around 1,400 households, examined how people had paid for goods and services in the previous month.

Despite the dominance of cards and online banking, cash remains widely used. More than two-thirds of adults reported using physical money at least once during the survey period, highlighting its continued role in daily life.

The data also points to a strong generational divide. Younger adults were far more likely to rely on mobile or internet banking, with 86% of those aged 16 to 34 using digital methods, compared with 63% of people aged 65 and over. Older islanders were more likely to use cash, with nearly three-quarters of over-65s paying with it, compared with just over 60% of younger adults.

Cash was most commonly used for everyday purchases such as food and drink, tipping, and visits to cafés, pubs and restaurants. People aged between 35 and 44 were the least likely to carry cash, while those aged 65 and over were the most likely.

When asked whether businesses should be required to accept cash, 77% of respondents said they agreed, indicating strong public support for keeping cash payments available even as digital methods grow.

The findings come as politicians continue to debate the future of cash on the island. A recent scrutiny review into cash acceptance produced a series of recommendations, including calls for clearer guidance to businesses. However, ministers have maintained that they will not force businesses to accept cash, opting instead to keep the situation under review as payment habits continue to evolve.
