Loganair has confirmed it will seek a long-term licence to operate flights between Jersey and Guernsey, following the collapse of Blue Islands and growing pressure to secure the Channel Islands’ inter-island air link.

From 15 January, airlines flying the “essential” route will require a formal licence, a step the States of Guernsey said was necessary to strengthen reliability after Blue Islands ceased trading. Loganair stepped in with emergency services over the weekend, joining Aurigny, which is also running temporary “recovery” flights and assessing longer-term options.

Loganair chief executive Luke Farajallah said the airline was actively preparing its licence application and argued that having more than one operator was key to protecting connectivity.

“We’re reviewing the requirements now, and we firmly believe this route should be served by two airlines,” Farajallah said.

“Our involvement would bring added resilience, not disruption, for travellers in Guernsey and Jersey. I hope the final decision recognises the value of having two strong operators rather than one.”

Aurigny has previously said it remains “fully committed” to maintaining a dependable air bridge between the islands and plans to submit its own licence bid early in the new year.
