Jersey Pupils to Receive Commemorative Badge for Liberation 80
Every primary school child in Jersey is set to receive a special badge marking the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day, in a tribute that blends history, memory, and celebration.
The commemorative badge, created by the Bailiff’s Chambers, is inspired by the childhood recollections of islander Enid de Gruchy, who was just four years old when Jersey was liberated in May 1945. The design captures a poignant moment from Liberation Day — young Enid’s visit to St Helier with her family, and the joy of being handed a sweet by a soldier, a taste she experienced for the very first time.
The Bailiff’s Chambers said the image was chosen to symbolise the joy and freedom experienced by Islanders on that historic day. “It was felt to be fitting to keep the legacy of her story alive in this year’s logo,” the statement read.
A limited number of the commemorative badges will also be available for the public to purchase at parish halls from 22 April. Proceeds from the sales will go to Age Concern Jersey, supporting the wellbeing of older islanders.
Mrs de Gruchy, whose story now forms part of this year’s Liberation celebrations, was born on 28 February 1941 and passed away in 2024. Her memory, now immortalised in the badge, offers a personal connection to one of Jersey’s most significant historical moments.
The 80th anniversary of Liberation Day will be marked across the island on 9 May, with events and tributes planned to honour those who lived through the Occupation and the joy of freedom that followed.
