Authorities in Jersey may soon have expanded powers to safeguard animal welfare under a new set of proposals tabled by ministers.

The draft legislation would give police the ability to enter properties and remove animals believed to be suffering or at immediate risk. It also includes new protections for service animals, making it a specific offence to harm working dogs such as those used by the police.

The plans would additionally restrict animal sales to adults, barring most young people under 16 from purchasing pets.

States Members are expected to consider the proposals early next year.

Jersey’s Environment Minister said updating the law was essential if the island wished to remain a leader in animal care and welfare, urging swift progress to ensure animals' best interests are prioritised.
