A marine rescue group is urging islanders and visitors to keep their distance from seals in Jersey’s waters to protect mothers and pups.
The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) said it had spotted newborn pups around the island earlier than usual this year. On Tuesday, the first pup of the season—a common seal, considered unusual for the area—was born just off Jersey’s coast.
Rescue volunteer Donna De Gruchy explained that many seals were currently pregnant and vulnerable to disturbance. She suggested that, if pup numbers continue to rise, the island may need a dedicated sanctuary.
“Grey seals are the species we usually see around Jersey, but common seals are far less frequent,” she said. “This birth was a rarity—possibly linked to the big tidal shifts we’ve had recently.”
The team stressed the importance of taking precautions when encountering seals. Members of the public are asked to call BDMLR immediately if they spot one, and to keep both children and dogs away.
“Please keep your distance, stay downwind, and wait for us to arrive,” Ms De Gruchy said. “Pregnant seals are especially sensitive, and disturbance can put them at risk.”
