A baby Linne’s two-toed sloth was born at Jersey Zoo on 15 January, marking an important milestone in the zoo’s breeding program.
The mother, Terry, and her newborn are bonding in their enclosure, which remains closed to visitors.
Sadly, the baby’s father, 23-year-old Rio, passed away nine days later due to worsening health. The zoo made the “difficult decision” to euthanise Rio after his condition deteriorated.
Despite the loss, the zoo celebrated Rio’s contribution to conservation, noting his genes were passed on through his offspring. The reopening of the sloth house will be announced soon.
