Jersey’s justice and home affairs minister has been granted expanded oversight of the island’s gas provider after new legislation was approved by the States Assembly.
The unanimously backed amendment to the Jersey Gas Company (Jersey) Law 1989 will require the company, now operating as Island Energy, to supply government ministers with information relating to the safety and security of the gas network.
Under the changes, Island Energy must report any risks to people or property. Failure to provide such information could result in prison sentences of up to five years, while supplying false or misleading information, or obstructing ministerial inquiries, could lead to sentences of up to seven years, alongside fines.
Justice and Home Affairs Minister Deputy Mary Le Hegarat said the Emergencies Council had highlighted the importance of receiving relevant information promptly, particularly in light of recent gas-related incidents.
The law will come into effect on a date set by the minister through an official order.
Before the final vote, Assembly members rejected a proposal from Deputy David Warr that would have significantly reduced the maximum jail terms, a move that was ultimately voted down.
