Jersey Landlords Encouraged to Clarify Pet Policies in Tenancy Agreements

Landlords in Jersey are being urged to clearly outline their pet policies in tenancy agreements following new government guidance on pets in rental properties.

The Government of Jersey's advice emphasises that tenants should have similar rights as homeowners when it comes to keeping pets. According to the guidance, landlords should generally allow tenants to request permission for pets unless there is a valid reason for refusal.

"If there are any reasons why you cannot allow pets or certain types of pets, these restrictions should also be made clear to tenants," the guidance states.

Tenants are also advised to consider whether a property is suitable for pet ownership before renting, particularly if they already have a pet. The updated advice aims to create a more balanced approach to pet ownership in rental properties while ensuring transparency between landlords and tenants.
