Jersey Hospitality Venues Could Be Required to Provide Free Tap Water

Hospitality venues in Jersey may soon be required to serve free tap water under proposed changes set to be debated by the States of Jersey.

Deputy Alex Curtis has lodged an amendment aimed at ensuring customers are not charged for drinking water where it can reasonably be provided.

He said many islanders would be surprised to learn there is currently no legal obligation for licensed restaurants, pubs, and bars to offer tap water at no cost — a requirement that already exists in the UK.

The proposal allows exemptions in situations where supplying tap water is not practical, such as during temporary supply faults or at premises relying on private water systems.

The amendment could be brought forward for debate as early as 24 February.
