Les Amis Celebrates 50 Years of Supporting Islanders with Learning Disabilities

Jersey-based charity Les Amis has marked its 50th anniversary, celebrating five decades of support for people with learning disabilities.

The milestone event took place last month at the grounds of Government House, drawing around 200 attendees. Among the guests were former Lieutenant Governor of Jersey, Vice Admiral Sir Jerry Kyd, and Lady Kyd.

Founded in 1975, Les Amis was established to empower individuals with conditions such as Down’s syndrome, autism, and cerebral palsy. Today, the charity provides essential services to over 100 adults across the island, including residential care and support for independent living.

The charity expressed its gratitude for the outpouring of goodwill. “We are humbled by the many messages of support,” Les Amis said in a statement, thanking the community and donors for their ongoing contributions.

As part of its continued growth, Les Amis has recently broken ground on a new £3.5 million specialist facility at La Rue de Bechet in Trinity. The site, expected to open next year, will include dedicated spaces for nursing care, complex needs, and end-of-life support.

“Demand for our services continues to rise,” said Chair Leslie Norman MBE. “We are excited to move forward with our new facility in Trinity, which will expand the range of care we can offer. Thank you to everyone who celebrated with us and supports our mission — we look forward to sharing more news soon.”
