Plans for a new runway at London Gatwick Airport have been welcomed by Ports of Jersey, with officials highlighting potential benefits for the island’s connectivity and economy.

The UK Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, confirmed approval of the £2.2 billion project over the weekend. The second runway is scheduled for completion by 2030.

Matt Thomas, chief executive of Ports of Jersey, described the decision as “a significant milestone in investment in constrained London airport capacity.”

He said the expansion could create more reliable flight schedules, improve efficiency for airlines, and open the door to new routes.

“Additional landing and take-off slots should enable airlines to be more efficient and schedules more reliable, as well as adding opportunities for growth in route networks,” Mr Thomas explained.

He added that the development would not only strengthen Jersey’s transport links but also support the island’s wider economy.“We look forward to the opportunities this expansion will bring to our community, to the island’s connectivity and our wider economy,” he said.

The UK government’s approval has sparked mixed reactions, with many businesses welcoming the move while environmental groups voiced concerns about the project’s long-term impact.
