Jersey community rallies to support Shelter Trust’s annual Tinathon

Islanders are being encouraged to donate canned food to Shelter Trust Jersey as its annual Tinathon takes place at West’s Centre today (9 October).
The collection runs from 8am until 2.30pm, with donations helping to replenish shelter kitchens and provide food parcels for people in need.
The annual initiative brings together schools, businesses and community groups to support people experiencing homelessness. It also takes place ahead of World Homeless Day on 10 October, which aims to raise awareness of homelessness and efforts to help those without a secure place to live.
Shelter Trust supports around 100 men, women and young adults every night across its seven sites in Jersey.
Josephine Scott, director of Shelter Trust Jersey, said the event highlighted the island’s strong community spirit and the difference collective donations could make.
She said that while a few tins might seem like a small contribution, donations from schools, workplaces, families and individuals across the island could have a significant impact.
Ms Scott added that the food collected helped the charity support people throughout the year, while the event also provided an opportunity to raise awareness of homelessness and the different circumstances that can lead people to seek help.
Alongside the collection at West’s Centre, donations can be made today at Waitrose, Alliance, M&S and Communicare.
The Co-op Grand Marché in St Helier will also accept donations throughout October.
