Residents across the Channel Islands have been urged to remain indoors on Thursday night as Storm Goretti approaches, bringing the threat of damaging winds and heavy rainfall.
Forecasters at Jersey Met said the storm is expected to arrive from early evening, with wind gusts potentially reaching 90mph (144km/h) from around 18:00 GMT and continuing into the early hours of Friday. In Guernsey, officials warned winds could reach force 12, with speeds of up to 73mph (117km/h).
The governments of Jersey and Guernsey both advised people to stay at home during the most severe conditions, forecast between 20:00 GMT on Thursday and Friday morning, and to avoid coastal areas during that period.
High tide is due at approximately 22:00 GMT on Thursday, raising concerns about coastal impacts, with authorities warning of large waves and hazardous conditions along shorelines.
Maritime users have been told to take extra care. Guernsey Coastguard urged boat owners to ensure vessels are securely moored before conditions worsen and advised against going to sea during the storm. In Alderney, public access to the harbour will be restricted from 16:00 GMT on Thursday, according to the Harbour Authority.
Guernsey’s States also encouraged islanders to review their plans, suggesting non-essential activities be postponed. Events scheduled on States-owned sites are likely to be cancelled, with confirmations expected by Thursday morning. Public transport services, including buses, may end early or be suspended if conditions deteriorate, while kerbside recycling collections could also be affected.
Residents have been advised to secure loose items around their homes, particularly in gardens, to minimise the risk of debris being blown about in high winds.
Jersey Met said weather warnings and forecast updates would be issued regularly and confirmed it was working closely with government departments to prepare for the storm. A final detailed forecast is expected on Thursday morning.
