Islanders Urged to Help Hedgehogs Beat the Heat

A local wildlife charity is calling on islanders to support hedgehogs during the hot, dry spell by leaving out food and water in their gardens.

The Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group has advised residents to put out cat biscuits or small dog kibble each evening, along with shallow dishes of fresh water.

The charity said it has recently seen a rise in hedgehogs arriving at its rescue centre suffering from dehydration, emaciation, and injuries caused by garden strimmers.

“With the prolonged dry spell and higher temperatures set to continue, it really is a matter of life or death for our hedgehog population,” the group warned.

To protect the food from seagulls and cats, the group suggests placing it under a box with a CD-sized hole cut into the side, allowing only hedgehogs to enter.
