Support Grows for Railway Revival in Jersey

A proposal to reintroduce a railway service in Jersey has received majority backing from Islanders who responded to an online questionnaire.

The plan, led by the Jersey Western Railway project, involves around 30 electrically operated locomotives running between St Helier, Corbière and the Airport, following much of the route of the Island’s original western railway, which closed in the 1930s.

The estimated £101 million scheme includes a terminus at Trenton Square near the International Finance Centre. Project organisers are in discussion with UK specialists about funding and intend to meet with the Infrastructure Department.

Of 105 respondents so far, 75% supported the idea of reviving the railway, while 80% said they would back government investment in the scheme even if they did not use the service. Islanders can continue to share their views via the jerseywesternrailway.co.uk website.
