Rue de l'Épine Named Jersey’s Prettiest Lane in Annual Contest

A quiet country lane in Trinity has been crowned the prettiest in Jersey, thanks to its untouched charm and natural beauty.

Rue de l'Épine earned top honours in the annual lane competition run by Société Jersiaise, with judges praising its "delightful ambience" and the lane’s rich blend of wildlife, wildflowers, and traditional hedgerow management.

Judges highlighted the absence of pesticides and noted the abundance of plant and animal life along the lane, including a diverse range of species nestled in its hedges, trees, and banks.

The competition celebrates lanes that strike a careful balance between nature and rural heritage. Criteria include biodiversity, branchage (the traditional practice of trimming vegetation to keep roads clear), and the overall health of the landscape.

Each parish was invited to nominate one lane, with 10 of Jersey’s 12 parishes taking part in this year’s judging. The panel included four experts: two rangers from Infrastructure and Environment, one from the National Trust for Jersey, and one from the Rotary Club de la Manche.

Last year’s title went to La Rue de Conet in St Brelade, continuing the tradition of showcasing Jersey’s most scenic rural routes.
