Islanders Urged to Conserve Water After Record-Dry Spring

After experiencing the warmest and third driest spring on record, Jersey Water is encouraging residents to take simple steps to reduce water usage as reservoir levels dip below seasonal expectations.

While there’s no immediate cause for alarm, officials say now is the time to act with care.

“It’s been an unusually dry spring,” explained Mark Bowden, Head of Water Resilience at Jersey Water. “The streams feeding our reservoirs are running particularly low for this time of year. Think of it like your bank account — it’s in decent shape, but the withdrawals are outpacing the deposits.”

To avoid the kinds of water restrictions currently in place in parts of the UK, where a hosepipe ban has been introduced due to drought conditions, Jersey residents are being asked to make a few everyday changes.

Bowden advises islanders to reconsider how they use water:

  • Leave the car dusty – skipping the wash saves more than you might think.

  • Tolerate a brown lawn – grass will bounce back when the rain returns.

  • Ditch the hosepipe – opt for a watering can instead.

  • Fix those leaks – a dripping tap or leaky toilet can waste gallons over time.

  • Only run full loads – dishwashers and washing machines should be used efficiently.

  • Shorten showers and turn off taps when brushing teeth to cut down on unnecessary water flow.

“These small actions really add up,” Bowden said. “We’re asking everyone to be mindful now so we can avoid tougher measures down the line.”
