The flight path between Guernsey and Jersey will be officially designated an “essential air route” from January, the States of Guernsey announced.

Following the collapse of Channel Islands airline Blue Islands, any operator intending to service the route from 15 January 2026 will require a licence. The move aims to ensure minimum service levels, overseen by the States’ Transport Licensing Authority, and provide long-term resilience.

Economic Development President Sasha Kazantseva-Miller said the collapse caused “significant uncertainty” and that the committee acted to reassure travellers over the Christmas and New Year period. She added that two airlines are currently operating the route and the committee is confident flights will continue throughout the festive season.

Before the new rules take effect, airlines can still operate the route without a licence.
