Jersey Government Considers Higher Parking Fees to Encourage Outskirts Parking
Jersey’s government is exploring the possibility of raising parking fees at central car parks to encourage drivers to use facilities on the outskirts of St Helier. Infrastructure Minister Constable Andy Jehan proposed extending the pricing structure used at Sand Street, where fees increase after three hours, to other car parks in the area.
Jehan hopes the changes will drive more drivers to Pier Road car park, which he said often has plenty of available spaces. However, reactions from drivers were mixed. Some, like Peter Tabb, said higher fees could influence their parking choices, especially for those with mobility issues. Others, like Ian Cuming, preferred Sand Street for its convenient location and flexible payment system, which allows users to pay at the end of their stay.
Chris Lakeman, another driver, said she would consider parking elsewhere if it were cheaper.
While some argue that the town lacks parking spaces, Constable Jehan emphasized the importance of utilising existing facilities like Pier Road before building new ones. He also acknowledged that a long-term solution may involve additional car parks on the outskirts of St Helier.
