Jersey to Continue ID Card Scheme for French Day-Trippers

Jersey politicians have unanimously voted to maintain a scheme allowing French day-trippers to enter the island using ID cards instead of passports.

The scheme, introduced in 2023 to revive tourism following a Brexit-related drop in visitors, had faced uncertainty due to the UK's plans for electronic travel authorisation.

Deputy Sir Philip Bailhache, who proposed keeping the scheme, said many French citizens lack passports and rely on ID cards. He welcomed the vote, highlighting the economic benefits: French visitors contribute an estimated £4.5 million annually.

Home Affairs Minister Deputy Mary Le Hegarat supported the move but noted the UK government is not in favour. She plans further talks with UK officials to argue the scheme poses no risk and is vital for Jersey's economy.
