The house sparrow has topped the list of the most-recorded bird in the Channel Islands for the second consecutive year in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

More than 1,000 people across Guernsey and Jersey took part in January, spending an hour counting birds in gardens, balconies and local parks. The blue tit moved into second place, followed by the wood pigeon.

The RSPB said participation remained strong, with more than 650,000 people nationwide recording over nine million birds from more than 80 species.

Experts welcomed the results but urged people to clean bird feeders regularly to help prevent disease, following continued declines in greenfinch sightings.
