A Jersey charity that supports new parents facing financial difficulties has launched a festive appeal for essential baby items. Baby Basics Jersey is urging islanders to “gift it forward” by donating nappies, toiletries and age-appropriate toys, which will be passed directly to families struggling over the Christmas period.

The organisation, based at St Mark’s Church and operating since 2023, works alongside health and social care professionals to identify parents who would benefit from additional help.

Centre lead Vicki Clayton said the impact of the support was often immediate and emotional.“We’ve heard from families who’ve just cried because everything they need is there for them,” she said. “These packs really do bring a sense of relief.”

Donations can be dropped off at collection points at Co-op Grand Marché, Bambola Toymaster and Mon Vee.

Ms Clayton stressed that toys play a vital role in the appeal. “People can think of toys as a luxury, but they’re not,” she explained. “We do receive lovely pre-loved toys that we can restore, but dignity is so important. Including a new, developmentally appropriate toy for each baby really matters.”

Volunteer Sarah Vosse said community support had been encouraging so far.“We’re lucky to have so many local retailers willing to help us spread the message,” she said. “Every donation goes straight to where it’s needed and brings joy — a real community hug — to families this Christmas.”
