Historic Gorey Petrol Pump to Stay After Planning Refusal

Plans to remove a historic petrol pump from the front of a listed property in Gorey Village have been turned down by planners.
Cherrylyn Seatter had applied for permission to re-render and repaint the exterior of 1 Hilgrove Terrace, a listed building located at the junction of Gorey Village Main Road and Old Road. The application also sought approval to remove the property’s distinctive green petrol pump, which has long been a feature of the site.
However, the planning authority refused the proposal, ruling that the removal of the pump would harm the character of the historic building. In its decision, Planning stated that the works would lead to “a negative impact on the character of the historic building and the loss of a historic feature which contributes to the special interest of the listed building and the character of the wider area.”
While the applicant described the pump as unsafe, Planning confirmed it had received evidence that the structure had been decommissioned and therefore did not pose a risk to public safety.
The government’s Historic Environment Team also raised objections, citing the absence of sufficient justification for removing a feature considered integral to the building’s heritage value.
Although permission to remove the pump was granted under a previous application in 2013, planners noted that decision was made under the 2011 Island Plan, which is no longer in force, and could not be relied upon in the current case.
