WWII Channel Islands Liberation Plan Found in Dusty Box
A rare copy of the top-secret plan to liberate the Channel Islands during World War II — known as Operation Nestegg — is going up for auction after being discovered in an old cardboard box.
The 50-page document, detailing landing sites, supplies, and troop movements, outlines the British strategy to free Jersey and Guernsey from Nazi occupation. It was drawn up between late 1944 and May 1945, when more than 40,000 German troops still guarded the islands.
Auctioneer Matt Crowson said the discovery “brings home the suffering of the Channel Islanders,” many of whom were starving by 1945.
The document will be auctioned by Hansons in Derbyshire on 13 August, with a guide price of £800–£1,200. Its discovery comes during the 80th anniversary year of the islands’ liberation.
