Health and Care Staff Report Lowest Job Satisfaction in Public Sector Survey

A recent government survey has revealed that Health and Community Services (HCS) employees are the least satisfied among Jersey’s public sector workforce, with only half reporting they enjoy their jobs.

The 2024 Be Heard survey found that one in three HCS employees consider their work environment unpleasant, and nearly a quarter feel anxious. Additionally, 10% reported feeling highly disengaged or bored. The department failed to meet its target ranking of a ‘One To Watch’ workplace, which signifies a ‘good’ work environment.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet Office also saw dissatisfaction, with 28% finding the workplace unpleasant and only 20% expressing job satisfaction.

In contrast, education and emergency services staff reported higher levels of contentment, with 65% of respondents in both sectors describing their workplaces as pleasant. The highest satisfaction levels were recorded in the Law Officers’ Department, where 83% of employees had a positive view of their work environment.

Despite all government departments missing their Best Companies Index targets, Deputy Malcolm Ferey, Vice Chair of the States Employment Board, emphasised that overall employee engagement has improved. He highlighted that staff pride in public service remains strong and that the survey results will help drive workplace improvements.

The survey serves as a key measure of employee sentiment and engagement, with government leaders aiming to address concerns and enhance job satisfaction across all departments.
