Jersey Cuts Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 48% Since 1990

Jersey has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 48% between 1990 and 2023, according to new government data. The island emitted 357,626 tonnes of greenhouse gases last year, down from nearly 700,000 tonnes in 1990.

The drop is largely due to cleaner energy supplies, though emissions remained largely unchanged between 2022 and 2023. Transport and building heating were the biggest contributors in 2023, accounting for 43% and 33% of emissions respectively.

Since 1990, transport-related emissions have fallen by 23%, and residential emissions—mostly from heating and cooking—by 55%. The report highlights that switching to low-carbon heating systems is key to cutting further emissions.

Jersey’s Carbon Neutral Roadmap targets net-zero by 2050, with £23 million committed to carbon-cutting initiatives between 2022 and 2025.
