Windsor Medical Practice has announced a major shift in how it delivers care, becoming the first GP surgery in Jersey to offer free appointments to its patients.
In a move designed to ease financial strain and improve access to healthcare, the surgery confirmed that all existing patients will no longer have to pay to see their GP. The initiative also extends to 1,000 new patients, who will be offered free appointments on a first-come, first-served basis.
Practice leaders say the change is here to stay, calling it a "permanent" policy aimed at supporting islanders and encouraging preventative care.
“No one should be forced to choose between their health and their finances,” said a spokesperson for Windsor. “We believe in early, proactive medical care, and this is a step toward making that accessible for everyone.”
The decision comes in the wake of comments from Health Minister Tom Binet, who recently floated the idea of introducing new charges for some health services. In contrast, Windsor’s approach goes in the opposite direction—removing barriers rather than adding them.
The practice says the move will not only benefit individual patients but also help relieve growing pressure on emergency services by making everyday care more accessible and timely. While some may view the offer as a short-term gesture, Windsor Medical Practice insists this is not a limited-time promotion but a lasting commitment to the community.
With the rising cost of living continuing to impact households across Jersey, Windsor’s decision is likely to resonate with many—and could well spark wider discussion about the future of healthcare funding on the island.
