Free Jersey course to teach construction skills and bring community together
A new free 20-week programme is being launched in Jersey to help people develop practical construction and woodworking skills while connecting with others in the community.
Charity GROW Jersey has received government funding for the new community life-skills initiative, called Bridge & Build.
The course will teach participants practical skills including upcycling household items that might otherwise be thrown away.
As part of the programme, participants will work together to design and build useful features for the GROW Jersey site, including benches, seedling tables and other structures to support community food production.
The course is designed to be inclusive and accessible, particularly for people who may be socially isolated, lack confidence or have had little opportunity to use tools or take part in community activities.
Dave Crocker, a founding member of GROW Jersey's core team, said the programme was about more than learning how to make things.
“Bridge & Build is about more than making things. It’s about giving people the chance to learn new skills, work together, and feel part of something purposeful,” he said.
He added that spending time outdoors, taking part in activities with others and creating something useful could all contribute to improved wellbeing.
Bridge & Build starts on 2 October and will run from 11am to 1pm. The course is free to participants.
