The long-closed Talana Hotel on Bagot Road is set for a new lease of life after the Jersey Royal Company secured planning permission to transform the property into accommodation for its staff.
According to Mike Renouard, the company’s business unit director, renovation work is already under way, with the aim of completing the project by mid-January.
The development comes after the potato producer — which was acquired last year by Albert Bartlett — warned that its expanded operation, now relying on up to 300 migrant workers, had outgrown its existing housing stock.
The newly purchased hotel will be refurbished to provide living space for roughly 80 employees.
“It came on the market at just the right moment,” Mr Renouard said, noting that the location would be convenient for staff. “They can walk into town, there are bus stops right outside, and supermarkets are close by — so it works well for them.”
