Flat Freight Rate Could Benefit Jersey Consumers

A new flat freight rate for goods arriving in Jersey could lead to lower consumer costs in the long term, according to the Jersey Consumer Council.

When DFDS takes over ferry services at the end of March, all freight providers will pay the same per meter of space, eliminating preferential rates for larger companies. Consumer Council head Carl Walker said this transparency could create a “level playing field,” though prices may rise initially before stabilising.

Politicians have raised concerns about higher freight costs under DFDS, but Economic Development Minister Kirsten Morel noted both DFDS and Brittany Ferries proposed similar pricing, and Condor had also increased rates in recent months.
