Fifty homes evacuated after reported gas leak

About 50 homes in Jersey were evacuated on Saturday night following reports of a gas leak.

Emergency services responded to the incident at Le Clos Mourant on Le Squez Road in St Clement. Engineers from Island Energy identified a pocket of gas in a service duct, which they vented before locating and repairing the source of the leak.

After four hours of clear readings in the affected properties, residents were allowed to return to their homes.

Andium Homes, the social housing provider for Le Clos Mourant, noted that the newly built properties had never been equipped with gas fittings. During the evacuation, residents were cared for at a nearby community center before being accommodated in hotels overnight.

The Jersey Fire and Rescue Service reassured the public via Facebook, stating:

"The residual gas pockets have been purged with clean air and no longer pose a risk."

Island Energy engineers will continue monitoring the site in the coming days to ensure no further issues arise.
